#Unmute Men Turns One: Breaking the Stigma Around Men’s Mental Health

In 2024, the male suicide rate was 17.1 per 100,000 in the UK — more than double the female suicide rate, and substantially greater than the overall rate of 11.1.1

Whilst staggering, the male suicide statistics are not shocking given the stigma around men’s mental health — a survey commissioned by Priory found that, whilst 77% of men polled had suffered with symptoms of common mental health conditions, 40% had never spoken to anyone about their mental health.2 Furthermore, 55% of respondents to the Maxable Global Men’s Resilience Pulse Survey reported that their most common response to feeling under pressure is pushing through and ignoring it — additionally, one in five respondents reported ‘often’ feeling mentally overloaded or under constant pressure.

In June 2025, to combat the evident men’s mental health crisis, Maxable Global’s #Unmute Men campaign was launched by our Global Mental Health Ambassador, Dr Sandeep Marwah — the accomplished founder and President of AAFT. With one year having passed since its launch, the work continues to put an end to the crisis, and break stigmas surrounding men’s mental health — amongst other members of the team, this work is supported by our Men’s Mental Health Ambassadors, Yaseen Kuthubdeen and Angelos Tsangarides.

Through #Unmute Men, we continue to promote open conversations around men’s mental health, creating safe spaces where men can speak without shame, and without fear of burdening others — this is crucial, with the Men’s Resilience Pulse Survey finding that the leading reason amongst respondents to avoid seeking support when under pressure was not wanting to burden people.

Our work does not seek to merely raise awareness, but is also intended to encourage action — from encouraging struggling men to seek help, to prompting people to take care to ensure that their male friends do not suffer in silence, we place a strong emphasis on prevention.

With the aforementioned Priory survey finding that 40% of men would wait until getting thoughts of self-harm or suicide before seeking professional help — and the results of the Men’s Resilience Pulse Survey highlighting men’s unhealthy responses to mental pressure — the need for a prevention-focused approach to men’s mental wellbeing is clear.

As our work continues, we are calling upon people to come forward to collaborate with us in our mission to advance preventative mental wellbeing.
