What the World Sees — and What It Doesn’t: When Children Express Themselves Beyond Words

Do children always need words to tell us what they’re thinking or feeling?

Children express themselves in different ways. Sometimes through conversation, sometimes through colours, images and creativity.

On 31 August 2026, Maxable Young Voices brought children together for a creative mask-making session to explore their feelings, experiences and what they wished adults understood about them.

Using colours, imagination and their own ideas, the children created and wore their masks, each bringing their own perspective to the activity.

Beyond the Masks

Led by Urvi Gala, Art Psychotherapist and Systemic Family Clinician, the session encouraged children to explore and communicate their views through creativity.

The aim was not to analyse their artwork or decide what it meant.

The meaning belonged to the child.

This was one of the sessions that contributed to From Our Side: What We Want You to Know, a book shaped by children’s reflections, ideas and contributions.

The session leaves us with a question worth considering:

Are we listening in the ways children choose to express themselves?

Children Speak. Adults Listen. Change Begins.
